As the biggest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes, or Rodos, is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Mediterranean. Rhodes boasts some of the best weather of all the Greek islands with over 3000 hours of sunshine every year. The island's natural beauty combines long sandy beaches, hidden bays and crystal-clear waters. The most popular beaches on Rhodes stretch along the north and east coasts.
Those craving an action-packed holiday with modern facilities should head for Faliraki with its wealth of water sports, lively bars and all-night clubbing scene. If it's a more peaceful authentic experience you're after, head to the island's untamed west coast or visit the traditional whitewashed village of Lindos, on the east coast, with its charming bays and picturesque views. Visitors can also enjoy day trips to the neighbouring islands of Kos, Patmos and Karpathos.
Rhodes Town is a unique combination of old and new. The modern financial and cultural centre is juxtaposed against the old town's medieval past. Steeped in history, the old town features a maze of narrow streets and medieval sites, such as the Knight's Castle and the Castello. Rhodes Town becomes very crowded during the summer months, so it may be preferable to visit in late spring or early autumn.
