Holidays in Mahon combine historic architecture, pretty squares, excellent shopping, bustling markets and one of the largest natural harbours in the world. The three-mile-long harbour is the capital's defining feature. Many visitors spend a relaxing afternoon watching the boats over a coffee, while others opt for an excursion on a glass-bottomed boat. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants lining the harbour and waterfront. In the evenings, the harbour buzzes with bars and even a few discos.

The main plaza, the Placa de S'Esplanada, holds a craft and clothing market every Saturday. Visitors can enjoy moseying round the maze of narrow streets in the old town. The island's best shopping can be found here in Mahon. Shopping-enthusiasts can browse the abundance of designer boutiques and local arts and craft stalls. Those seeking more traditional Menorcan markets can head to the old market towns of Es Mercadal and Alaior.

Mahon boasts many historic buildings and monuments, the most famous being the 16th-century Arch de San Roque, which is the only remaining relic of the medieval walls that used to surround the city. The Town Hall was built in 1631 and features some of Menorca's most famous paintings. Also worth a look is the Church of Santa Maria, which is home to a spectacular organ with over 3000 pipes.
